Information on Cottage Holidays in Helston
Helston is a market town on the Lizard Peninsula in the West Country. Everyone has heard the song ‘floral dance’ but do not necessarily associate it with Flora day in Helston which is celebrated on the nearest Saturday to the 8th of May each year. Visitors flock to the town to watch or participate in the mimes and medieval re-enactments, including the slaying of the dragon by St. George, with much dancing in the streets lead by the Helston Band.
The high street is dominated by large granite buildings which house shops, banks , pubs and hotels such as the Angel which is a gathering place for snooker players. There are several restaurants, including a wine bar and Indian in the centre of town. There is some free parking plus a small ‘pay and display’ car park. For any holidaymakers wishing to stock up on groceries or sandwiches and snacks for their holiday, there is a 24 hour Sainsbury supermarket on the south side of Helston and 24 hour Tesco on the north side.
The market town of Helston is best known for Flora Day in early May when thousands of visitors converge on the town to enjoy the spectacle of St George and St Michael slaying the dragon and devil, children and dancers dancing the floral dance to the music played by the enthusiatic town band.
