South Woodham Ferrers is a friendly modern riverside town with good local amenities. The above photograph shows people crabbing during the summer at the River Crouch, where there is a yacht club, lots of colourful boats and many swans. It is an excellent base for a self-catering holiday or weekend break for anyone who would like to visit Essex and perhaps enjoy trips into London or to the big shopping centres of Lakeside or Bluewater. A railway station in the town is on a branch of the London Liverpool Street to Southend-on-Sea.  There are direct trains to London which take about 45 minutes. Southend-on-Sea is about half an hour's drive away.

There is a leisure centre in the town with a swimming pool, gym and badminton courts. The shopping centre is built around a major 24 hour supermarket. The town is blessed with an amazing variety of eateries including several Indian restaurants, a Thai restaurant, a carvery pub, Chinese restaurants, coffee shops and fast food takeaways.

Visitor attractions in South Woodham Ferrers are:

• Marsh Farm - an open farm with lots of children's activities, farm animals to feed and various playgrounds
• Tropical Wings which is a small zoo with open air displays, soft play area
• RHS Hyde Hall gardens (just outside South Woodham Ferrers)

 All the above have tea rooms for some very nice cake and light lunches.

There are also a couple of places for young children to play indoors with soft play equipment and toys. There are various parks and playgrounds around the town creating open green spaces. The Fens and riverside paths are good for walks. This section of salt marsh attracts its own special wildlife.  There is a large colony of swans down by the river that look forward to people bringing bread.

Interesting towns to visit near South Woodham Ferrers are Maldon with various small independent shops and Promenade Park (brilliant for its outdoor water play and giant sandpit), Battlesbridge just a couple of miles away with an antiques centre.  The local car boot fairs are excellent and deserve a special mention. People come from miles around to visit Lazybones which opens at 10.30 am.

Chelmsford is the nearest city and administrative centre.
