Perhaps not noted as perfect walking country, parts of Essex away from the urban sprawl offer some unique walks. Epping Forest is well known, but there are many other forest and pleasant coastal or inland walks of interest. Local people walk the sea walls and fens with their views of the sea or rivers.
Constable Country is in the north of the county on its border with Suffolk, demarcated by the River Stour. This is where you will find the village of Dedham and many of the locations that Constable painted. The countryside with its historic villages is truly beautiful and highly recommended to anyone visiting this part of Britain. There are numerous pretty colourwashed or pargeted cottages to admire.
