The nearby village of Taddington is a top village, literally! For wonderful scenery, we recommend a visit to Monsal Head. This high viewpoint overlooks the valley of Monsal Dale, an area so picturesque that it has been used as a location for several films. A man-made landmark here is also much photographed, namely the Headstone Viaduct, which spans the River Wye. This imposing structure is some 300 feet long and is more often referred to as the Monsal Dale Viaduct by the locals. The former railway line is now part of the Monsal Trail. This walking route is about 12 miles in length and follows the River Wye for most of the way, taking in some gorgeous countryside. If you prefer to cycle, this is possible at the trail’s eastern end but not at the western part.

Held at the Bakewell Showground on the first Wednesday and Thursday each August, it’s one of the oldest agricultural shows in the country.
