People sometimes choose to rent holiday homes outwith the Peak District to reduce the costs because rentals may be that bit less expensive but also because they may be in a town that provides shops and entertainment which adds convenience and practicality to a self-catering break. It all depends on what you like to do in the evenings after a day out in Derbyshire. Family groups may be quite happy to play games or chat, therefore a rural cottage in the depths of the countryside would be acceptable to them. Groups of friends may prefer to dine out or go to the local pub and prefer a town such as Matlock because of the amenities it offers.

However, if you manage to book a holiday cottage in Hartington, Hathersage or one of the other very pretty small villages, you may appreciate the encounter with village life and the tranquillity of these areas. As long as the villages are not too small, they are likely to have a pub, village store and perhaps a petrol station.
