If you’re after some excellent beaches then you don’t have to travel too far. There are over half a dozen lovely, safe and sandy spots easily accessible within 10 miles of Newton Ferrers.
Less than two miles away is Wembury Beach. Popular with rock poolers and surfers, Wembury has won an award for its clean and relatively shallow waters. Look out to the Mewstone, an offshore island once a smugglers refuge and a prison and visit the historic beachside café, formerly a mill. There is a marine education centre here and the area flourishes with interesting walks and birdlife. Just four miles from Newton is Bovis beach in a sheltered bay with cliffs on both sides. At low tide there is an expanse of golden sands ideal for family fun. There is a perfect, quiet, unspoilt and unusual beach under five miles away. Mothecombe beach is privately owned and is only open to the public on Wednesdays and weekends. The beach is maintained by the estate and has been rewarded by the Marine Conservation Society for its efforts. Dogs are allowed on certain parts of the beach that also has a car park, café and toilet facilities.
If you want to do some shopping on your cottage break then Newton Ferrers is only 10 miles from Plymouth allowing you to get some retail therapy and night life should you wish. And while you’re there why not visit the largest aquarium in the country, the National Marine Aquarium, and enter an extraordinary underwater world.
