Book a cottage break in Uplowman, Devon, England
Uplowman is a peaceful rural hamlet in Devon, nestled in trees and surrounded by fields and pastures, with an ideal setting for a rural retreat break. The village takes its name from the nearby river Lowman that sources in Exmoor and ends south of Tiverton. The village is ideally situated for exploring Exmoor National Park which is only around 12 miles away and for discovering mid Devon as well as the north Devon and Somerset coast on a cottage holiday.
The village supports its own school and has a church that was built around 1500, the benefactor being none other than Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond, mother to Henry VII and paternal grandmother of King Henry VIII. Another famous lady with links to Uplowman was Joyce Wethered. She was the last family member to inhabit Knighthayes Court, a nearby gothic Victorian Manor, built by Tiverton lace industrialists the Heathcoat-Amory family, and now run by the National Trust. Joyce Wethered, who became a world championship golfer and a noted gardener, was the wife of Sir John Heathcoat-Amory. The house and its magnificent gardens are open most weeks of the year and are a recommended place to visit.
The area within a comfortable drive of Uplowman offers diverse attractions and sights. Pubs, restaurants, hills, moorland, beaches, country houses and gardens and children’s parks are all waiting to be discovered on a self-catering break. And with the M5 so close you have easy access to other parts of Devon and Somerset.
The nearest town to Uplowman is Tiverton, the principal town in mid Devon. The town is still the centre of the Heathcoat lace making business since it started in 1816 and prior to that was a major wool centre. Built on two rivers, this town has a rich history. In 1106 Tiverton castle was built and is now a private house open to the public. There is a redeveloped market operating three days a week and modern shopping facilities so you can stock up on all the supplies you need for your self-catering holiday. Attractions local to Tiverton are the Great Western Canal Park where you can hire boats and take a trip on the last horse drawn barge in the south west, and it’s all aboard for a great day out at the Devon Railway Centre just south of the town. Working narrow gauge and miniature railways, play areas, historic rolling stock, the centre is a haven for kids and rail enthusiasts.
A quiet country holiday in Uplowman could appeal to families, couples and those with pets. There is as much or as little to do in this part of the West Country as you wish. Self-catering accommodation can often work out best price wise and typically offers a good amount of space. Whether you rent a pet-friendly cottage, a rural retreat or a large family cottage we trust that you will enjoy your stay in this corner of Devon.
