If you like the idea of staying somewhere with plenty of facilities yet close to some stunning countryside then the town of Tavistock could be a great choice for you.  Located around one mile from the outstanding landscape of Dartmoor National Park, the national park is easily accessible for days out from Tavistock.  This national park is a fantastic place for walking, cycling, horse-riding and taking in some amazing views.  Guided walks are also sometimes available if you would like a little help when it comes to exploring.  

Other attractions that may particularly appeal to families taking a cottage holiday in this part of the West Country include Tamar Valley Donkey Park.  This award winning park and animal sanctuary is located in nearby Cornwall at Gunnislake around 5 miles from Tavistock.  Here children can enjoy meeting a variety of different animals including pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits and of course donkeys.  There is also a soft play barn where children can enjoy some fun times.   

For older visitors, there is an array of National Trust large country houses and gardens in Devon to visit for great days out.  Visits are of course free for members but charges apply for non-members.  Choices include Buckland Abbey at Yelverton, Castle Drogo by Dartmoor National Park and Finch Foundry near Okehampton.
