This linear, limestone village is located in the Derbyshire Dales and within the greenery of the Peak District National Park. It stands out as one of the highest villages in Derbyshire and, in fact, the country. Unusually, there is a phone box in the village made from stone, which is thought to be unique. For a tranquil country cottage holiday in gorgeous countryside, Chelmorton fits the bill perfectly and walking opportunities will suit the active family.

About Cottage Breaks in Chelmorton

In keeping with Peak District custom, Chelmorton participates in the annual well dressing ceremony every June. Well dressing is the practice of decorating wells with natural materials. These decorative images often follow a theme, such as agricultural or religious. St. John the Baptist parish church is the highest one in Derbyshire. Inside the church, the Chelmorton Tapestry reveals the local history, spanning pre-history to the current day, in a series of panels.

Chelmorton for Derbyshire Charm

Chelmorton is just a few miles from Buxton, which contains lots of attractions and events. The town of Buxton is well worth visiting whilst taking a self-catering break in the area. Follow the Buxton History Trail and see much-admired Georgian and Victorian architecture. Children will love Go Ape, located in Buxton Country Park. This popular adventure course has high wire zip lines and rope bridges in the treetops. Another must-see attraction is Poole’s Cavern, a show cave at the foot of Buxton Country Park with wonderful crystal formations. Visitors can see the crystals clearly under a modern lighting system.  It’s a full day out with a children’s play area and visitors centre. Climb up to the folly known as Solomon’s Temple and you’ll have a panoramic vista of Buxton.

Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens offer an opportunity to enjoy 23 acres of Victorian style gardens with lovely walks, children’s areas and lakes plus a miniature train ride. The park hosts several events throughout the year including farmers’ markets, food fairs, antique fares and toy fairs. For more ideas, recommendations and information on things to see and do in Derbyshire why not visit the Tourist Information Office in Pavilion Gardens for free leaflets and advice? The helpful staff can let you know about some of the area’s top attractions.

Bakewell is another place to visit when staying in Chelmorton. It’s an attractive market town with market day held on Mondays, a centre full of shops and historic buildings. Riverside walks along the River Wye offer a change of gear. Of course, the town is famous for its Bakewell Puddings. You can learn more about this culinary tradition at the site where they were originally sold, the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. The shop hosts Bakehouse Tours on which visitors can see puddings being made and try their hand at making some themselves.
