On the first day of August each year, the townspeople witness an old tradition when a proclamation is read out on the steps of the obelisk, stating that no one should short change their customers and everyone must keep the Queen’s peace. The old stocks in the square are a reminder of the consequences of not following these rules! St. Mary’s Church, constructed in Saxon times, is thought to be the town’s oldest building.
Iron ore mining was an important industry in the local area and visitors can learn all about it at the nearby Duddon Ironworks, a blast furnace fired by charcoal. Closed since 1866, it’s now a fascinating visitor attraction.
