Find self-catering holiday accommodation in or close to Hawkshead for a fascinating holiday in the Lake District National Park. Hawkshead is a lovely village in Cumbria in a popular area of the Lake District not far from Lake Windermere. In addition to seeing the surrounding gorgeous scenery, visitors are interested in the village’s literary associations. William Wordsworth attended the grammar school, and Beatrix Potter lived close by. The Old Grammar School building houses a museum where you can hear a talk and look at displays, including items relating to Wordsworth’s time there.  Families love visiting the Beatrix Potter Gallery, where you will see some of her original illustrations and learn about her role as a local conservationist.

Hawkshead’s traditional village charm is enhanced by whitewashed cottages, tea rooms and pretty churches. Cars are not allowed within the village, so shopping for gifts is most relaxing.

Many people staying in Hawkshead take the opportunity to visit nearby Grizedale Forest. It has a great deal to offer, including a walking sculpture trail and cycling trails. Go Ape is also here, with high adventure on zip wires.

There is no better base than Hawkshead for a relaxing self-catering holiday with lots of inspirational Lakeland scenes to discover close by. To the north is Esthwaite Water, a favourite haunt of anglers, and Near Sawrey, the village where Beatrix Potter lived. It’s also convenient to go to Lake Windermere and Coniston Water. One of the most popular attractions overlooking Coniston Water is Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, the 19th century writer and social reformer. Fascinating items relating to his life are on display in the house, and the informal gardens are a joy to discover.

When it comes to finding a place to base your break, choose from lodges, log cabins, country cottages and even mansions to rent. Have the best of times in or near to Hawkshead on your self-catering holiday.
