Hawkshead is a lovely village in Cumbria in a popular area of the Lake District not far from Lake Windermere. In addition to seeing the surrounding gorgeous scenery, visitors are interested in the village’s literary associations. William Wordsworth attended the grammar school, and Beatrix Potter lived close by. The Old Grammar School building houses a museum where you can hear a talk and look at displays, including items relating to Wordsworth’s time there. Families love visiting the Beatrix Potter Gallery, where you will see some of her original illustrations and learn about her role as a local conservationist.

Hawkshead’s traditional village charm is enhanced by whitewashed cottages, tea rooms and pretty churches. Cars are not allowed within the village, so shopping for gifts is most relaxing.

Many people staying in Hawkshead take the opportunity to visit nearby Grizedale Forest. It has a great deal to offer, including a walking sculpture trail and cycling trails. Go Ape is also here, with high adventure on zip wires.
