Information on Cottage Holidays in Birkby, Maryport

Birkby is a tiny hamlet in Cumbria, about two miles from Maryport. This proximity to Maryport, a thriving town on the Solway Firth, makes Birkby an ideal base for a family break. With its many attractions and children’s activities, visiting Maryport means there is always something of interest to see.

The Lake District Coast Aquarium exhibits include freshwater fish, tropical reef fish, rock pools and native sharks and rays. However, this attraction is more than a simple aquarium. The kids will love the adventure playground (for 5-15 year olds) next door, where equipment has a nautical theme. Boats and Aquablasta offers the chance to operate radio controlled powerboats and target practice with a water cannon! Also at this venue, a crazy golf course keeps all ages entertained and toddlers can have their own special clubs.

West Coast Karting is another terrific attraction for the family. Enjoy indoor karting, with safety clothing and helmets provided, in both adult and child-friendly go-karts, suitable for those aged eight and more.

If you want to hear some wonderful live music, such is the prestige of the annual Maryport Blues Festival that it attracts world famous acts. Past performers include Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Ruby Turner, John Mayall and Jethro Tull. The 2013 festival will take place at The Wave Centre.

Speaking of The Wave Centre, it is a complex for entertainment and conferences, making the town a draw for leisure and business. This venue serves as a theatre and a cinema and presents concerts and children’s entertainment. You can also grab a coffee and snack at the coffee shop and snap up a souvenir at the gift shop.

The Maritime Museum, located at the harbourside, has excellent exhibits on the local maritime history. Maryport has a connection to the tragic Titanic, being the birth town of the White Star Line’s owner, Thomas Henry Ismay. The award winning Senhouse Roman Museum is the place to go to learn about the area’s fascinating Roman past. It’s situated adjacent to a Roman fort, which has supplied many of the displays in the museum’s collection. Items have also been found at the nearby Roman civilian settlement. An observation tower in the grounds gives terrific views of the site.
