The full route is 72 miles, but you can ride it in sections to suit your timetable. Quaint stations, pretty villages and the rolling Dales glide by the windows. Passengers are plunged into darkness in the long tunnel at Blea Moor and they marvel at the engineering achievement of the Ribblehead Viaduct with its 24 elegant arches.
On a blazing hot day, there is nothing to beat a refreshing swim in the outdoors. Not many open-air pools still exist in Britain, so Ingleton’s heated pool is doubly appreciated. Located by the riverside, it is well maintained. It’s only open during the summer season.
If you fancy the idea of playing some golf on your self-catering break, Bentham Golf Club is just 3 miles from Ingleton and has an 18-hole course nicknamed the ‘Augusta of the Dales’. When you see it, you’ll know why. This attractive course contains no fewer than seven ponds. Visitors are warmly welcomed and there is a restaurant and specialist golf shop.
