Low Row for a Cottage Break in the Yorkshire Dales National Park: A linear village located in North Yorkshire, Low Row is an attractive destination for anyone wanting to sample the scenery and activities on offer in Swaledale.  Set within the Yorkshire Dales National Park this is excellent rambling country and an area recommended for self-catering walking holidays.

What Low Row offers for Cottage Breaks

Walking is a favourite pastime in the area and involves short walks and famous routes alike. The Coast to Coast Walk goes near to the village and The Pennine Way is also nearby.  Caves and waterfalls are common in this distinctive landscape, where the sheep contribute to the local economy with their fleeces and local milk goes into the famous high quality Wensleydale cheese.  If it is natural wonders you are after, this could be a truly inspiring place to visit.

If you are taking a family self-catering break you may want to see an actual farm at work, Hazel Brown Farm welcomes members of the public to its visitor and information centre. The kids will love meeting the farm animals and April visitors will be in time for the lambing season.

Three miles from Low Row is the village of Reeth which offers a very good shopping centre should you wish to enjoy some retail therapy on your cottage holiday. Market day here is on Fridays and stalls display locally produced good quality food, clothing and gifts. Following a browse round the market, numerous cafes, ice-cream parlours and tea rooms provide meals and snacks. It’s also a good destination for craft shops, offering traditionally made goods and galleries for an artistic souvenir. Reeth also contains the Swaledale Museum, a useful resource centre run by volunteers which focuses on the local history and culture associated with Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. Learn how the Dales were formed, about the impact of humans on the area and how local people lived and worked up to the 1950s.

If you are looking to enjoy some entertainment whilst on your cottage break, depending on the time of year of your visit, you may be in luck.  The annual Reeth & District Agricultural Show is a fun day out for all the family. Past highlights have included bird of prey demonstrations. Musical fun is on show at the annual Swaledale Festival, a two week festival held across several villages, including Reeth, within Swaledale, Arkengarthdale and Wensleydale. Different kinds of music, including classical and jazz, are performed at both ticketed and free events.

To learn more about the local area’s history whilst on holiday, head to nearby Gunnerside to the Old Working Smithy & Museum. This smithy first operated in 1795 and the many artefacts tell its story. The blacksmith in residence today can offer lots of fascinating information about his tools and the cooking utensils placed round the hearth. Forged items are sold as gifts and visitors can also order customised souvenirs.

A little further afield, a seven mile drive from Low Row, is the market town of Hawes. Many people come through Hawes to see Hardraw Force, the highest single drop waterfall in England. The Dales Countryside Museum is also worth a visit and tells the story of the Dales from the time of the Stone Age to the reign of Queen Victoria, including displays on the old lead mining industry. Shops and restaurants in Hawes give more choice to people staying in the area.

Swaledale, with Low Row as a base, provides amenities and events for couples and families against a backdrop of stunning views. If a romantic break, rural retreat or country cottage holiday is what you’re looking for, you won’t be disappointed.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Low Row, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in North Yorkshire.
