Thinking of booking a holiday cottage in Great Smeaton as a base for exploring north Yorkshire? North Yorkshire is an enjoyable destination for getting out in the countryside and participating in rural pursuits. The landscape lends itself to hiking, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and pony trekking. Great Smeaton is an attractive village to stay in, ideally located for pretty scenery in an area popular with walkers, cyclists and anglers. Its church is worth visiting when you have a little time to spare on holiday; ithas the distinction of being the only one in Britain to be named after Saint Eloy and is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1089. You can be warm and cosy at the local pub, a coaching inn first opened in 1739.
Situated halfway between the market towns of Northallerton and Darlington, Great Smeaton is not far from town shopping and leisure facilities – always useful to anyone taking a cottage holiday. Market days in Northallerton are Wednesdays and Saturdays, and there is a wide choice of pubs and cafes. Darlington has more than 200 independent shops in addition to indoor and outdoor markets. If your Yorkshire cottage does not have a swimming pool, go for a swim at the Dolphin Leisure Centre. There is always Stephenson's locomotive to see at the Head of Steam - Darlington Railway Museum. Also, don't forget to see the train made out of bricks on the edge of town!
