Looking to escape for a cottage holiday in the Romney Marshes in Kent?  Centrally located in the Romney Marshes, Lydd is a town in Kent which is not far from the coast.  With a number of historical buildings, as well as quaint country cottages, Lydd is an attractive place for a cottage break.  There are plenty of green spaces within the town itself and Lydd is surrounded by farmlands and fields.

Information on Cottage Holidays in Lydd

The town has a golf course and there is also a museum, entrance to which is free.  Romney Marsh is known for its wetland areas, birdlife, wildlife and rural churches which can be reached via a network of footpaths.  With Hythe and Folkestone within relatively easy reach, there is plenty to see and do in this part of Kent.  Nearby coastal towns worth visiting are Rye and Littlestone-on-Sea.

Once on the coast, because weather conditions altered the path of the River Rother in the 12th century, Lydd now lies 3 miles inland. The 130ft tower of the 'Romney Marsh Cathedral' survived the Second World War and visitors to the largest church in the Romney Marshes can view the fine 15th century screen and 16th century brasses.

A holiday in this part of ‘the Garden of England’ may appeal to those who are looking for that wonderful combination of both coast and country.  There are a number of attractive sandy and shingle beaches along the Kent coastline but also much greenery inland.  For those who love spending time outdoors, a self-catering holiday in Romney Marsh could be ideal.  There are a number of excellent footpaths and cycle lanes in the area.  Enjoy country walks whilst looking out for marsh wildlife which includes marsh frogs, water-voles and farmland birds.  If you would like a tour around Lydd itself, we recommend that you visit the town museum and ask for more information about the guided walks that are available during summer time.

If you decide to explore the Kent coastline, a trip to Hythe which is around 13 miles away from Lydd comes highly recommended.  Folkestone is a further 3 miles drive past Hythe.  This part of Kent has a fascinating history as smuggler’s country.  Why not visit one of the tourist information centres in the area upon arrival to find out more about the best places to go and the best things on offer.
