Lydford is the site of a very important Anglo-Saxon town set up in 890 AD by Alfred The Great. The town held huge significance in Saxon times as a defence against the Vikings and the Cornish. The village itself still has many remnants from this time with an Ango Saxon wall and huge viaduct now part of the Dartmoor cycle track. The village also has two good pubs.
