Ranby is a hamlet by the A1 trunk route west of Retford in Nottinghamshire and a quiet spot for a cottage break. The lovely Clumber Park and lake is a mile south of Ranby; a very nice place for an afternoon walk. Robin Hood's old haunt, Sherwood Forest is adjacent to Clumber Park from the south. Children still come across the exploits of Robin Hood in the media and a holiday visiting the forest in search of the merry men is meaningful and potentially exciting. This part of the East Midlands offers much of interest to families with children, something different from the tradtional seaside break, although a day out on the coast is feasible from Ranby; the seaside town of Skegness is just over 1.5 hours drive away. Other suggestions for days out during a cottage break are Alton Towers theme park (1.5 hours drive), the Peak District (1 hour), and Sheffield (42 minutes).
