About Lydney for Cottage Holidays
Lydney overlooks the River Severn and stands in a rural wooded area popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. People come for weekends and longer holidays to walk the ancient trails through beech woods and the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. This part of Gloucestershire, close to Monmouthshire and the Welsh border, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts who come not only to walk but also to mountain bike, canoe, ride horses along the bridleways and generally enjoy the countryside. Inevistably, these visitrs require somewhere to stay and self-catering cottages and apartments are the perfect solution because they are cost effective for groups of more than four people and offer privacy and comfort that can be rivalled by alternative forms of holiday accommodation.
Visitors frequently add Symonds Yat to their list of places they plan to visit whilst staying in Lydney. The city of Gloucester is excellent for a day out and offers much in addition to a fine cathedral. There is a good walk following the River Severn to Chepstow and its castle. The pretty Cotswold hills and towns lie to the east and offer added attractions. Come for a week or two to truly appreciate this lovely part of England.
Shopping on the main street is very pleasant, as is seeing the pleasure craft moored in the historic harbour. All the family can go for a swim at Forest Leisure or in the Bathurst open air pool. Lydney Park Gardens and Roman Remains is a popular area destination, with beautiful displays of flowers and shrubs including azaleas and rhododendrons in the large woodland garden. Archaeological digs on the estate revealed the ruins of a Roman temple and a Norman castle. Lydney Railway Station is on a line that serves the Dean Forest Railway, where passengers can ride steam trains or diesel trains, board ‘Santa Specials’ and enjoy other special events. You can also see historic artefacts at the Dean Railway Museum whilst on your self-catering break.
