Holiday in Lyme RegisWhatever you want from a self-catering holiday or break you’ll be glad you came to Lyme Regis. Young or old and whatever the season, there’s something in Lyme Regis to suit you all.   This charming coastal town should be an excellent choice for family self-catering breaks and romantic getaways alike.

About Cottage Breaks in Lyme Regis

Since the 1700s, when it was discovered that sea air was beneficial and Thomas Hollis built its first promenade, Lyme Regis has been attracting holidaymakers and visitors year after year, century after century. The resort has a safe, clean sandy beach to recommend it where children can play to their hearts content building sandcastles, investigating rock pools and splashing in the sea before settling down to a Punch and Judy show.   You certainly shouldn’t be short of choices when it comes to things to do on a cottage holiday in this part of the West Country.

Palaeontology, or fossil hunting, has been another popular pastime in Lyme Regis since the early 1800s when Lyme and the Jurassic coast were found to be an Aladdin’s Cave for collectors. Enthusiasts still flock to the area and for those not aware of the hobby and its regulations, organised searches are available at Lyme Regis and nearby Charmouth.  As though to endorse Lyme’s importance as a centre for fossils the streetlights along the seafront are forged with the shape of an ammonite.  Along the seafront and in the town centre the town also offers a number of art and craft establishments as well as food and specialist shops and there is certainly no lack or variety of places to dine out should you wish to.

A monument to naval architecture is the harbour or Cobb. The Cobb, in a variety of guises over the centuries, has protected ships and boats and provided a breakwater for the town since the 1500s. Still a very active harbour, the Cobb is also popular with anglers, either off the Cobb or out at sea with local fishing boats. Once the venues for trade some of the buildings on the Cobb have been converted to offices and museums. There is a marine life centre there and you can also research the history of the Cobb including its part in literature and films. For those looking to enjoy some casual or more serious walking on a self-catering break there are many scenic routes in and around Lyme Regis. Or perhaps you’d prefer to simply enjoy the scenery in the quiet of the seafront gardens.

Entertainment and sport are high on the agenda in Lyme Regis. There is an unspoilt traditional cinema and a theatre in the town.  Lyme also hosts lots of annual events and festivals which you may be lucky enough to catch on a cottage break. Courses are available in paddle-boarding, wind surfing and kayaking. You can even learn boat building here.
