Knightstown is located on Valentia Island which is in the south western part of Ireland in Kerry. It is the most populous settlement on the island with only a tiny population of less than two hundred people! With tree lined streets and a setting close to the coast, Knightstown is a really picturesque place for a self-catering break on Valentia Island.

What Knightstown offers for Self-Catering Breaks

There are plenty of picturesque harbours and charming beaches close by to stroll upon as you lap up this little hidden gem in one of the most western parts of Ireland. Knightstown also has an assortment of coffee shops, cafes and bars it the town centre, some of which date back to over one hundred years ago. Sitting in one of these and watching island life outside the window as you relax with a warm cup of tea and a cake is a wonderfully relaxing way to let a lazy afternoon go by, and you will likely get into a friendly conversation with a local, which is always one of the best things about going to Ireland! The pubs in the town often have bands playing traditional Irish music, and it is wonderful to listen to this live music during a warm summer’s evening whilst on a cottage holiday on Valentia Island.

There are other places to see on Valentia Island if you are planning on staying in Knightstown, and one of these is the Geokaun Mountain, the tallest on the island. If you enjoy trekking then a hike up Geokaun is brilliant as the summit provides spectacular views of the villages and towns below. There is also the Glanleam House which is home to sub-tropical gardens, set up in the 1830s by Sir Peter George Fitzgerald. With an incredible collection of rare plants from countries from as far as New Zealand, Japan and Chile, visiting this botanical centre is a must if you have any kind of interest in beautiful flora.

Valentia Island is also home to its own heritage centre. Visitors can get an in-depth insight into the history of the island this way, including Knightstown, and there are often lots of displays and information available about different aspects of Valentia, from geology to the world of nature.

Knightstown may be small and tucked away but it is a beautiful little place to visit or stay in for a self-catering holiday. When it comes to finding a special place to stay, choose from holiday chalets, log cabins and coastal cottages.

Book a Knightstown cottage and look forward to discovering some of the best of Kerry on holiday.
