Beddgelert is famous for its connection to the legendary story of the dog Gelert, and in fact, the name of the village itself is reputed to be named after this dog. There is no evidence that the story of Gelert is true, but this doesn’t stop tourists flocking to the historical feature of Gelert’s Grave, the supposed resting place of the dog. This grave can be found along the banks of the Glaslyn when walking south from the village, and upon the tombstone visitors can read information about the story of Prince Llewelyn the Great who stabs his dog to death for the murder of his baby son, only to find the body of the wolf that had actually killed the baby. If you are taking a cottage holiday in Beddgelert then you will probably find yourself at this tombstone which is steeped in legend.

There are also plenty of activities which visitors can take part in whilst on a self-catering break in this part of Wales which include climbing the nearest mountain to Beddgelert, Moel Hebog. Moel Hebog overlooks the village and ascending to its summit provides you with spectacular views over not just Beddgelert but the surrounding villages as well. If you really feel like a challenge you can climb Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales, which is only about 15 minutes away by car from Beddgelert.

The Sygun Copper Mine is located about 2 kilometres from Beddgelert and is a Victorian mine which closed in 1903 but is now open to the public. Descending to the depths of the copper mine is truly fascinating, and there is also an art museum and an art gallery in the complex, making it a great day out from the village.
