Wallingford is an Oxfordshire country market town, situated just 13 miles from the fascinating historical city of Oxford.  Surrounded by acres of pleasant green countryside, Wallingford could be an excellent choice for a self-catering break.  Enjoy meandering around the pleasant historical streets of Wallingford and may be do a spot of shopping at the local independent shops.  Don’t miss the Town Hall which dates back to the 17th century.  Once a month, there is also a farmers market in town.  The River Thames runs through the town and with towpath walks by the river and by meadows, this is a great place to spend time down by the river.

The town still boasts the street layout established by the Saxon king Alfred and is a pleasant mix of Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and modern buildings with almshouses, antique shops, pubs and restaurants. Wallingford is centrally situated on the Thames Path and there are numerous walks from nature rambles along the Thames or to Wittenham Clumps Nature Reserve or within the town around the Saxon earthworks or the castle grounds. There's a local cinema/theatre in the old Corn Exchange and swimming and paddling pools by the bridge in the riverside park.

There are plenty of good places for walks by the River Thames in Wallingford itself and further afield.  The Thames Path is an excellent long walk and can be joined at Wallingford.  Boat trips are on offer from Riverside Park during the summer months.  There is also an outdoor heated swimming pool and paddling pool which is open to the public in the summer months.  For more country walks you can head to the Cotswolds, a very special Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, parts of which are accessible for day trips from Wallingford.  You may also want to visit the beautiful university city of Oxford with its impressive historical buildings and great atmosphere.  For more good country living by the river why not head to charming Henley on Thames for a spot of lunch?
