The Lincolnshire Wolds and Marshes are a range of chalk hills that stretch for 45 miles parallel to the east coast, incorporating the towns of Horncastle, South Elkington, Binbrook and Caistor. To their east lie the fertile marshes leading to the sea and on the west the clay fields and woods of of the valleys. Most surprisingly, Lincolnshire was one of the most cultivated and populated areas of England by the 14th century. The Black Death and shifting populations resulted in numerous permanently abandoned villages.
