This narrow section of England has a long coastline with many seaside towns and good beaches. People head to the south west as soon as the grey skies of winter disappear. The national parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor also beckon, and a steady stream of surfers heads for the Atlantic coast and strong winds and high waves.
The M5 Motorway carries holidaymakers in their cars into the heart of the West Country. The popularity of this area during school holidays is such that cottage changeover days of Fridays and Saturdays cause congestion on the road and unfortunate traffic jams. The journey outside peak periods is much more relaxed and steady.
