The lovely small town of Chirk in Wrexham is surrounded by beautiful green countryside and is a great place for a country cottage holiday. Wrexham is in the north eastern part of Wales and borders Shropshire in England. The town of Chirk is home to just under five thousand residents and is close to the trickling waters of the River Ceiriog. The town is undoubtedly best known for its historical castle. Aside from the castle, there is a lot to see and do on a cottage holiday in this area of Wales and walkers will be keen on trekking part of the famous Offa’s Dyke, a walking trail which follows the border of England and Wales. There is also the Chirk Aqueduct which can be found on the Llangollen Canal. A section of this canal was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and getting a boat to float down the canal is a great way to see the aqueduct, built in 1801 by Thomas Telford.

What Chirk, Wrexham offers for Self-Catering Holidays

The incredible 13th century Chirk Castle is located on the outskirts of Chirk and is a National Trust property open to the public each year between the months of March and October. The castle is a must-see if staying in this charming town as it dates back to an unbelievable 1295 when it was built by Roger Mortimer de Chirk for King Edward I of England, and its imposing structure is just wonderful to see, as are the beautiful gardens. These gardens are home to yew hedges and 18th century parkland and make for a lovely stroll once you are done exploring the delights of the castle itself. Entrance is free for National Trust members.

Also in Chirk, St Mary’s Parish Church is a must-see. This beautiful church is in fact a Grade I listed building that dates backed to the 11th century, with roots and a history even older than that. There is also the Ceiriog Memorial Institute in the nearby area of Ceiriog. This institute features a wide collection of Welsh memorabilia along with lots of useful information and was founded in the early 20th century as a means of supporting the Welsh language and culture. Visiting this centre is fantastic for those with an interest in the preservation of the language and heritage of this wonderful part of the UK.

Chirk Castle and the town of Chirk are great parts of Wales to visit with lots to recommend them, especially if you are visiting other places on the border of England. The canal is very picturesque and the castle is fascinating, making for a lovely self-catering break in Wales.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Chirk, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Wrexham.
