Just a fifteen minute drive from the village, Chirk Castle is an imposing 13th century fort, owned by the National Trust and with fascinating things to discover within its walls. The castle was originally constructed in 1295 by Roger Mortimer de Chirk for the King of England at the time, King Edward I, and it is also home to beautiful gardens and parkland which are pure bliss for taking relaxing walks in after a look around the castle.
Another fantastic thing to visit when enjoying a cottage break in Llwynmawr is the World Heritage Site of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Constructed in 1805 by Thomas Telford, this incredible canal boat crossing towers over any structure nearby and is simply one of the most fascinating feats of engineering in Great Britain. Taking boat trips along the canals’ sparkling waters as ducks swim by and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct stands tall and proud in the background is the best way to really appreciate this World Heritage Site and Grade I listed building.
Llwynmawr is home to lovely pubs and inns and although it is quiet, there is much to see and do in the vicinity. Walks available close by include the North Berwyn Way which guies you through the Ceiriog Forest and along through the North Berwyn Mountains.
