Criccieth is a lovely picturesque town on Cardigan Bay in Gwynedd in North West Wales. Dominated by the imposing ruins of Criccieth Castle, the town itself is based around the beach and is a popular seaside resort for families. It is home to a delicious ice cream parlour which opened all the way back in 1927, as well as numerous cafes, restaurants and bistros, many overlooking the stunning bay and ocean. For a special family self-catering holiday in Wales, Criccieth could be a great choice.

What Criccieth, Gwynedd offers for Self-Catering Holidays

There are two beaches at Criccieth, the East Shore with golden sands and water that is perfect for bathing in due to its shallow waters, and Marine Beach which is a lot quieter and more secluded, with several cottages and guest houses having direct access to the beautiful shores. The beaches at Criccieth are great places to relax on a cottage holiday and to gaze out across the water towards the stunning landscape of Snowdonia National Park. The climate in Criccieth is said to be good with little rain, and the lush green rolling hills surrounding the town are home to many beautiful species of plant and flowers such as gorse flowers.

Criccieth hosts a couple of popular and exciting fairs throughout the year which draw in a large number of visitors to the small town and these fairs have taken place here for over 100 years. During late May and June each year, there is a large outdoor market which spreads throughout the streets as well as a fun fairground for the children to enjoy. If you happen to be enjoying a self-catering break in Criccieth during these dates then a visit to this historical fair is a must!

One of Criccieth’s top attractions has to be its 13th century Criccieth Castle which stands on a rocky peninsula overlooking Cardigan Bay. This Welsh castle was built by Llywelyn the Great who ruled over the kingdom of Gwynedd, and today makes for a fascinating visit with exhibitions and details on other Welsh castles which can be seen inside the walls of Criccieth Castle. A visit to the castle makes for a wonderful day trip for the family and is filled with fascinating facts and information about the history of this part of Wales.

With a great tennis club, a 9-hole golf club, the Criccieth Bowling Club and waves and waters perfect for surfing in, sports lovers will have plenty to do in this beautiful town on Cardigan Bay. The settlement is perfect for family holidays and whether you are just looking to relax on the glorious beach or soak up the culture and history of the area whilst on a self-catering holiday, Criccieth has something to offer everyone.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Criccieth, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Gwynedd.
