As the county town of Denbighshire in North East Wales, Ruthin is full of exciting things to do and is a wonderful place in which to go for a cottage break in this stunning part of the country. The town is steeped in history with the old part being perched on a hill in the Vale of Clwyd and the southern part at the bottom around the picturesque River Clwyd.


Advice on Cottage Holidays in Ruthin

There is a historical castle which dates from the late 13th century and is located at the top of the hill in the town. It is now a hotel but it can still be visited and explored, and the charming gardens set within ancient woodland are simply wonderful and enchanting.

Ruthin Gaol is a Pentonville-style prison and the only one of its kind in the UK that is open to visitors and features dark cells and remnants of harsher times during the Victorian era, making it an eerie and fascinating trip when taking a cottage break in Ruthin. There has been a prison on the present site since the seventeenth century but this building dates from Victorian times, giving an insight into what life would be like for these unfortunate prisoners. Creepy and educational, Ruthin Gaol is a must-see if in the town and if you like hair-raising experiences!

The incredible town house of Nantclwyd y Dre can be found on Castle Street in Ruthin and dating from around 1435, it is thought to be the oldest town house still remaining in Wales today. Having only been open to the public since 2007, this incredible house is home to seven captivating rooms, each representing different ages in the history of the building.

Another fascinating day out whilst on a self-catering break in Ruthin, is a trip to the town’s Craft Centre that features six workshops with craftsmen displaying their skills to the public. These crafts include painting, glass blowing and furniture restoration, and watching these skills being performed is incredibly insightful and interesting. As well as the workshops, the centre includes a retail gallery, residency studios, a tourist information centre, an educational room and for those who get peckish, a restaurant serving delicious cuisine.
