About Tackroom Cottage

Arriving at the sandstone viaduct and gates of the private Cairnsmore Estate you immediately get that 'away from it all' feeling. A clear burn runs alongside the winding avenue that leads to the Stable  Block and Courtyard and ahead the hills and forests emerge as you approach the Courtyard archway to your destination.

The Tackroom is a 250 year old traditional Galloway Category B Listed building that was originally part of the stable block for the private Cairnsmore Estate. The estate is the ancestral home of the Stewart family and was once the shooting estate of the Dukes of Bedford. As soon as you drive through the estate gates, along the avenue bordered by rhodedendron and broad-leaf trees, the surroundings evoke a by-gone time. The cottage's fabulous and peaceful location make this the ideal base for relaxing and exploring the local area. There is wonderful walking in the surrounding area (highlighted in the Newton Stewart Walkfest) and is on the footpath to the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet (2,300 feet).

The garden is surrounded by stone dyking and contains two unique barns, each with 12 granite pillars under slate roofs. These magnificent buildings were restored in 2004 and are the only paired examples we are aware of in Scotland. They were used for storing hay that was cut from the surrounding fields for the estate's working horses. Today one of them has a gas BBQ for cooking outside and outside furniture.
