Althorp is a lost village that sadly no longer exists, and this settlement was once located in the English county of Northamptonshire. Today, the country estate and Grade I listed building of Althorp is located on the grounds of the village, just 5 miles from the county town of Northampton. Since it was built by Robert Spencer, 2nd Earl of Sunderland, in 1508, it has been the estate of the Spencer family, and is currently the official residence of The Earl and Countless Spencer. Althorp was once home to Diana, Princess of Wales before she married Prince Charles, and she is buried on the grounds.

Princess Diana’s grave is on an island in an ornamental lake within the gardens of Althorp Park. There is a path leading up to this island known as The Round Oval, lined with thirty-six oak trees – one for each year of Diana’s life. With four black swans swimming in this lake, white roses and water lilies in and by the pond, as well a summerhouse nearby, it is a peaceful and picturesque place, and a beautiful tribute to ‘The People’s Princess’.

Althorp estate is open to the public during the entire months of July and August, with all profits going to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. With nineteen rooms open to explore, which have incredible collections of paintings, ceramics and furniture throughout, it makes a fascinating visit where you can soak up the rich 500 year history of this family. There is also a gift shop for if you wish to take home a memory of Althorp Estate home with you.
