Cottage Holidays in Allihies, Cork, Ireland
About Self-Catering Holidays in Allihies
Allihies has a rich history of copper mining which occurred in the town for an incredible 3,500 years from the Bronze Age, and can be seen in the engine house on the mountain by the settlement, installed in 1862. When the mine closed due to a large drop in prices of copper in the 1870s, a lot of the miners immigrated to the USA, particularly to Butte, Montana. Today, this engine house has been conserved by the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland due to its historical and cultural significance.
Discover the Allihies Copper Mine Museum on a cottage holiday. This is a popular attraction in the village which is interesting, educational and fun. Visitors can discover lots of information about the copper mining past of this settlement through displays, artefacts and events, and there is also the delicious Copper Café with seating outside as well as in, where you can soak up the stunning scenery of Allihies and at the same time sample some succulent local seafood.
As well as the copper mining history, the village of Allihies itself is very pretty, with rows of multi-coloured cottages, several cosy pubs to settle into and landscapes that include fields and hills, mountains and beaches, all of which help to make this a great place for a self-catering break. The beach close to the village features soft golden sands and calm waters, perfect for children to play in, and there are also lots of opportunities to participate in walking trails. One of these is the Copper Mine Trail, another is walking through Beara Way. This long walk will take you through lots of other towns and villages, as well as historical and archaeological sites of interest.
Plenty of festivals take place in Allihies every year, including the annual Allihies Festival in each August. Featuring live music, horse racing and the more unusual bale tossing, it is a lot of fun for the whole family.
Allihies is a gorgeous village with a close-knit community, and its rich history, spectacular backdrops and fun festivals make it one of the more unusual villages to visit in County Cork for a memorable cottage holiday to remember.
