In the very southern part of Ireland is magnificent County Cork, and situated by the North Atlantic coast within Cork is the lovely and charming town of Bantry. This town has ancient connections to the Saint Breandan and used to be a major fishing port, meaning it has a rich and varied history which makes it an interesting place for a self-catering break. As with many of Cork’s towns, Bantry has absolutely stunning scenery which simply has to be seen to be believed, and with the natural harbour of Bantry Bay being close by, you can have a varied and relaxing cottage holiday in the town.

Advice on Cottage Holidays in Bantry

The old tracks and trails of Sheep’s Head are close to Bantry as well as the beautiful Beara Peninsula with the towering Slieve Miskish and Caha Mountains running through the heart of the headland. Both of these regions offer excellent walking and hiking trails for those who wish to get stuck in and immerse themselves in the true beauty of Bantry and its surrounding areas whilst on a self-catering break.

In the centre of the town is a large square which used to be where cattle fairs were held. Today, it is the hub of the settlement with functions and events being held here, as well as a fun and colourful market that is held weekly in the plaza. The people of Bantry are friendly and welcoming and with lots of shops to wander about in and restaurants and pubs to settle into, you will feel like a local after a couple of days!

Bantry Bay is a must-see if enjoying a cottage stay in Bantry, and at 22 miles along the Atlantic shore, it is a striking stretch of coastline, perfect for relaxing in, breathing in the fresh sea air or taking rambles across. There is a lot of history in the bay area as well as the town itself, as it is very much associated with the Irish Rebellion of 1798. It was the location where an attempt to launch a rebellion was tried by a French fleet, and a large anchor from the French Armada of 1796 stands by the bay after being discovered off the coast of Whiddy Island in 1980.

Bantry is a gorgeous town steeped in history, and with an incredible bay and beach area, lots of nearby places to go for treks and walks along with spiralling mountains and plush verdant hills completing the backdrop, it is one of the most beautiful gems of Ireland and County Cork.  Enjoy some of the best that Ireland has to offer with a cottage holiday in or near Bantry.

Book a Bantry cottage and look forward to discovering some of the best of Cork on holiday.
