Beach holidays in the UK and Ireland in self-catering holiday cottages

Beach holidays at Golden Sands of Carbis Bay Beach CornwallThere is nothing quite like a British beach holiday for families.  Think of deckchairs, wind shields in the sand, children running in and out of the waves, buckets and spades, collecting sea shells, ice creams dribbling down chins, fish and chips, sand in your food and a bracing breeze.

There are always traditional resorts that you can visit for shows, fun fairs, lights to rival Blackpool and British style seaside entertainment that amuses the kids.  Many resorts are still  proud of their wooden piers leading far out into the sea, which generations have walked year by year.

A modern attraction is the summer weekend fireworks display from the pier. Some, like Southend have a miniature railway running the length of the pier for amusement and a welcome rest for the tired. Punch and Judy shows have mostly disappeared with the arrival of political correctness but you're still likely to find beautifully vulgar postcards of fat ladies on the beach, enough peppermint rock to keep dentists in business this century and Bingo in the amusement arcades. Yes, it's tacky and quite dreadful, but also a little piece of British tradition in decline that the children can enjoy before it vanishes altogether.

What do you like about holidays at the seaside?

How's this for a wonderful beach?

And where is it?  Pembrokeshire in Wales, where you will find some of Britain's most beautiful and cleanest beaches.  This is where you can still have a safe and carefree beach holiday.  Relax and read on the beach whilst the children make sand-castles and paddle to their heart's content.

Take a look at our cottages in St. David's, Pembrokeshire, for the perfect summer beach holiday.  St. Nons Bay luxury holiday cottages near the beach. 3 delightful 5 star luxury cottages in the fishing village of St. David's or the Pembrokeshire National Park. 3 bedroom holiday cottage near the most fabulous beaches on the Gower peninsula in south Wales

seaside cottage in GowerThis coastal cottage is just a short walk from the beach at Oxwich in Gower, Wales.  Oxwich beach has been described by the Travel Magazine as one of Britain’s most beautiful beaches.  With 3 bedrooms, this holiday home could be ideal for a family self-catering holiday by the coast.  You can even see the beach in the distance from outside Honeywell Cottage.  Also nearby is Oxwich Castle and two nature reserves.

This is an excellent location from which to discover the beautiful Gower Peninsula with its numerous clean sandy beaches.  Award winning beaches in Gower and Swansea Bay which have been recognised with both a blue flag and seaside award include Caswell Bay, Bracelet Bay and Langland Bay.  Limeslade Bay has achieved a Green Coast Award and Rural Seaside Award.

The accommodation at Honeywell Cottage is stylish and all arranged over one floor.  The doors and hallway are all wide for easy access so this property may appeal to those with limited mobility.  For more advice and information on accessibility features get in touch with the owners.

With 3 bedrooms, this cottage can comfortably sleep 8.  The lounge/kitchen area is open plan and well equipped with pretty much everything you could need.  There is a dining room table with 6 chairs.  There are also wonderful sea views from the open plan living area over Oxwich towards Three Cliffs Bay.

Outside the cottage there is an elevated deck area where you can sit out and in good weather, enjoy views of Oxwich Bay, Cefy byn, Three Cliffs Bay and Oxwich Castle.  There is plenty of parking plus ample safe storage for your outdoor leisure equipment.

Oxwich Bay is one of Gower’s most popular beaches and with an impressive 2.5 miles of sandy beach, it is easy to see why!  This beach also benefits from good facilities and access.  There is parking, shops and the beach is surrounded by attractive woodlands.  Whether you enjoy building sandcastles, sunbathing or jumping on the sand dunes, there is plenty to enjoy at Oxwich Bay.

Do note though, that although popular, there is no lifeguard at this beach so children must be supervised at all times.  The bay is also used for watersports so care should be taken to stick to safer, quieter areas away from boats and jet skis when in the water.

If you prefer to spend time on a secluded peaceful beach, you could head for Nicholaston Burrows which is relatively isolated.  This is a really beautiful beach backed with sand dunes.  The only downside with this beach is the relatively long walk to the parking so if heading here pack a picnic and come prepared!

Perhaps sailing is more your thing, sunning on deck in your bikini, tacking across the bay,  or eating al fresco on deck. It's quite amazing how many sailing clubs there are all around the coast of Britain and how lovely it is to see yachts and small boats dotted about the water.

A seaside holiday in Britain can be much what you would like it to be. There are sandy beaches, pebble beaches, award winning beaches, sheltered bays and windswept swathes of coastline, cliffs and rocks, harbours, estuaries, tacky resorts, conservative resorts.  One marvellous thing about a beach holiday in Britain is that when you're tired of the beach in its many variations, its never very far to a selection of tourist attractions inland.
