The market town of Denbigh can be found within Denbighshire in North Wales in the Vale of Clwyd, a recognised area of outstanding natural beauty, and is a charming little settlement to visit or stay in. Perhaps best known for its castle, Denbigh is home to numerous historical buildings and is also well located for discovering the beauty of the Welsh countryside, coastline and even the city of Chester with its city walls in nearby England. Denbigh as a location for a cottage holiday has plenty to recommend it.

What Denbigh offers for Self-Catering Breaks

Denbigh Castle is one of the main draws to the town and the remains of this 13th century fortress should definitely be visited if you are taking a self-catering break in the area. The ruins of the castle stand on a hillside overlooking the town of Denbigh and from this vantage point you can appreciate fantastic views of the Clwydian range. The castle has been abandoned since 1660 and today makes for an eerie visit, along with the historical town walls which run for two thirds of a mile and make for an interesting walk. A new visitor centre with café has recently been opened at the castle and offers visitors more access to information on the history of the building along with trails to guide visitors.

Away from the castle, another historical building worth a mention is Leicester’s Church, a fascinating structure if you love architecture and history. Named after the Earl of Leicester, the relics of the church which dates back to 1578 can be found within the town walls.

Another point of interest in the town is Bachygraig Woods. The Bachygraig Woodland Trail is a wonderful walk that can be taken through this old 14th century royal hunting ground. With rare plants, flowers and trees within this ancient forest as well as animals such as the badger, walking through here on a sunny afternoon is a great way to spend the day in Denbigh.

Within the town of Denbigh if you’d like to eat out on whilst on your cottage break you can be assured that there is plenty of choice available. There are a number of restaurants, pubs and country houses in and near Denbigh to choose from, offering good quality fare.

Similarly, when it comes to days out, there is plenty of choice of places to visit and things to see. The Clwydian Hills and Dee Valley is close by and a joy to discover.  Llanrwst in the northern part of Snowdonia National Park is just 20 miles away so grab those walking boots and prepare to explore the splendid scenery on offer in Snowdonia.

If you prefer to spend some time by the seaside on your self-catering break then the coast is easily accessible just a short car ride away. The seaside resort of Rhyl is just 11 miles away from Denbigh. If you fancy seeing the sea and lounging on a glorious sandy beach then a day trip to Rhyl is a fantastic idea. With a lovely promenade and plenty of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants, Rhyl is home to a water park, a harbour, a museum, theatre and cinema, so you can easily have an action-packed day in this lovely resort.

Chester in England is another place, easily accessible for a day trip, at just 33 miles away. Chester is recommended for a visit with its historical buildings, fascinating Roman history and city walls to recommend it.
