Just outside of Snowdonia National Park is the small town of Llanrwst. Set by the River Conwy in Conwy, North Wales, Llanrwst’s picturesque riverside setting makes this town a lovely place for a cottage holiday. Located in this gorgeous part of the country where 65% of the community speak Welsh, you will feel like you have travelled further than you actually have! This typically Welsh settlement is a tourist haven as it is located very close to Snowdonia National Park which is renowned for the excellent walking and hiking opportunities on offer there.

Advice on Cottage Holidays in Llanrwst

When it comes to finding a base for your getaway, choices include Welsh country cottages, log cabins and remote rural cottages. The best advice available is to choose somewhere that most closely suits your needs and to book early as the top rated places often get booked up quickly.

Snowdonia National Park of course is home to Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales. Hiking up to this incredible peak on a self-catering break is a wonderful way to get sprawling views over the magnificent countryside below. For those who prefer an easier life, take the train and appreciate the rewards of fantastic views without all of the effort.

One of the features of Llanrwst is the three-arch stone bridge over the river. The bridge is called Pont Fawr and it is very narrow as it used to serve horses and carts, and was built in 1636 by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir Castle, a nearby manor house dating back to 1492. The bridge connects Llanrwst with this striking manor house as well as the road that leads to the settlement of Trefriw, and it is a prominent feature in the town.

Beyond the Pont Fawr Bridge is the enchanting Gwydir Forest, also within Snowdonia. The forest includes lots of lakes and ancient trees, and has spectacular views towards the Carneddau and Glyderau mountain ranges. Cycling and walking through this beautiful and serene forest whilst on your cottage getaway is a fantastic way to appreciate the beauty of this area of Wales, and you can do so daily if staying in Llanrwst. The Marin Trail is a great biking route in the forest which runs for 17 miles, part of which is uphill. This is wonderful for sporty types and those who love a challenge!

There are over 100 miles of tracks and footpaths all around this elevated forest, including by the many lakes such as Llyn Parc and Llyn Elsi. Sitting by the banks of one of these lakes for an afternoon picnic is a great way to spend time with your loved ones and you can even take your dog here so that no member of the family needs to be left out on a visit to Gwydir Forest!

Llanrwst is home to plenty of pubs, restaurants, cafes and tea houses, and there are also a number of individually-owned shops in this market town selling souvenirs, antiques and handmade goods. This market town is quaint and charming and perfect for a cottage break close to Snowdonia National Park.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Llanrwst, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Conwy.
