Overton or Overton-on-Dee as it is often known as, by virtue of its location on the picturesque River Dee, is a rural village in Wrexham in north east Wales, close to the border with England. With a community of just over one thousand residents, wonderful historical buildings, sweet country cottages along with black and white historical buildings, this is a beautiful little village, ideal for a relaxing and tranquil cottage break in this part of Wales.

What Overton offers for Cottage Breaks

The village is home to the parish church of St Mary the Virgin which is a domineering structure in the High Street and features yew trees in its church yard that are around two thousand years old. These ancient trees are older than the church itself which dates back to Norman times and visiting it is a must when enjoying a cottage holiday in Overton-on-Dee.

Overton has a large collection of buildings which date back hundreds of years to the 18th and 19th centuries which are well-worth visiting. These buildings are often listed as they are of either historic or architectural importance, and they include the ‘Cocoa and Reading Rooms’ which dates back to 1890 and was originally built to publicise temperance, a social movement urging the prohibition of alcohol.

Overton-on-Dee is the perfect spot for a cottage getaway those who love walks, rambles and hikes. You can take relaxing strolls along the banks of the serene river or you can walk along the Maelor Way which is a footpath that runs for an impressive 38 kilometres. The famous Offa’s Dyke National Trail which runs alongside the border of England and Wales is a fantastic trail to walk along a part of, and is also close by at Bronygarth. There are several other trails along the Llangollen Canal which are just wonderful for walks and ambles.

Chirk Castle is close by to Overton and this fascinating National Trust 12th century fort also has charming gardens to walk in after an afternoon of exploring the delights and history inside the walls of the castle. There are also plenty of small shops and pubs in and around the village which are excellent for sampling the local delicacies or getting to know the friendly villagers that reside in this beautiful part of the UK.

Overton-on-Dee has its own special charm, and although it is quiet, there is still plenty to do. It is pure paradise for those who love walking as there are endless trails to discover and take every day, and you can choose to hire a bicycle or do a spot of pony trekking if you wish as well.
