On the western coast of Ireland in Galway around thirteen miles from the town of Clifden lies the picture perfect village of Roundstone. Located right by the sea, enjoy vistas of fishing boats happily bobbing in the harbour, seagulls soaring in the sky and the magnificent sight of sea set against the backdrop of the Twelve Ben mountains on a cottage holiday in this special part of Ireland.

What Roundstone offers for Self-Catering Breaks

For those with young children, the village has a delightful play park with views out towards the coast so you can sit and soak up the views whilst the children safely play, who could wish for more?

In terms of activities, those who enjoy fishing should be well catered for on a self-catering break in Roundstone. Sea angling is possible on boat trips out to the Atlantic whereas on land there are plentiful opportunities to enjoy salmon and trout fishing in Roundstone Bog Lakes. Walking and hiking is another recommended activity in Galway with excellent hill walking opportunities in and near the Twelve Ben mountains and ample rambling opportunities in Connemara National Park.

Those with a love of culture should particularly enjoy a cottage holiday in Roundstone as this pretty village is steeped in culture. Known for the creativity which has gone on here in the past and present, including famous Irish artists who have painted in the village such as Jack B. Yeats and Nano Reid, the community is home to the Roundstone Arts Week during the summer which is a celebration of all things artistic for the youthful population of the village. Small charges apply for some of the events on offer during Arts Week whereas others are free. Traditional Irish nights are also held throughout the summer months of July and August which showcases a vast and interesting array of music and dance from the local Connemara area, perfect for those looking to soak up culture when on a trip to Roundstone.

Those who enjoy viewing the making of art or purchasing it as well as handy crafts will be elated at the fact that Roundstone has several studios and shops where you can do just that. The Stable Gallery in Errisbeg House showcases the work of modern artists in a wonderful location, and the Michael Killeen Park is home to Roundstone Ceramics which includes a pottery studio and a shop selling locally hand-made ceramics. Visitors can also see how these ceramics have been made in the studio, as well as the silver jewellery by The House of Mag Aoide which is also crafted on site here. Lovers of pretty watercolour paintings should visit Yvonne King’s gallery which is located in the village and shows paintings of local scenes and landscapes.

As Roundstone is located by the sea, it is home to lots of events on the water including its annual Regatta. One to catch if enjoying a cottage holiday in July, the whole village comes together during the Regatta to celebrate one of the longest-running nautical events in this part of Ireland as it dates all the way back to the 1890s. Men, women, boys and girls take to traditional sailing and rowing boats to compete in two days of racing across the beautiful Roundstone Bay, and these competitors are not only from the village or nearby areas, but sometimes from other countries throughout the world. Along with the boat races, the Roundstone Regatta holds other events and activities such as a noontime mass, dancing and traditional music to make the festival a brilliantly fun event to pop along to.

Roundstone is gorgeous with a great sense of art, culture and community, and nestled by the incredible Twelve Ben Mountains, it is an idyllic place for a cottage getaway. Choose from romantic cottages, unusual cottages and family cottages. We hope you find a unique place to stay in this special part of Ireland.

Book a Roundstone cottage and look forward to discovering some of the best of Galway on holiday.
