Hooray for Hornsea and seaside cottage breaks in Yorkshire: Hornsea is a popular seaside resort in East Yorkshire and a superb family self-catering holiday destination. The Blue Flag award winning beach, local walks, history, shopping and all kinds of leisure pursuits make this one of the most diverse spots for a short break, or longer cottage stay during the summer.

About Self-Catering Holidays in Hornsea

Of course, you can take a lazy amble down the promenade and enjoy traditional fish and chips, whilst breathing in the sea air. At the northern end, the Floral Hall presents concerts, dances and plays all year round.

For a historic look at the town, Hornsea Folk Museum houses its displays within 18th century buildings and has many artefacts from the 1880s. The farming heritage and crafts are exhibited along with a large collection of the famous Hornsea Pottery, which put the town on the map. See a typical farm kitchen from Victorian times and learn how lace was made.

Hornsea is also an excellent choice for a bird-watching cottage holiday.  Birdwatchers congregate at Hornsea Mere, the largest inland freshwater lake in Yorkshire. It’s a Special Protection Area for birds and it’s an important habitat for lots of wildlife and rare species. As well as a valuable natural environment, it provides an enjoyable leisure facility. You can walk around the lake, take a rowing boat out or go sailing or fishing. Best of all, the kids can feed the ducks!

If retail therapy is more your thing, the Hornsea Freeport factory outlet village is the place to be. More than 30 stores slash prices in half including famous brand items and the outlet hosts events too.  There are fantastic opportunities to make savings on high quality items.  We all have more time to browse and enjoy shopping on holiday.

Depending on the timing of your cottage break, you may get the opportunity to attend the annual Hornsea Carnival which is held in July.  This carnival is a chance for everyone to let their hair down. Past carnivals have included prizes for the best floats, treasure hunts, sandcastle competitions, stalls, fireworks and the crowning of the Carnival Queen. Hall Garth Park is the venue for the carnival and for other events. It’s a large park, where families gather to use the playground equipment and there is a free skatepark.

The kids will also love Honeysuckle Farm, near to the town centre, where they can ride on a shire cart and eat an ice cream made with homemade jersey cream. Farm animals that call it home include horses, goats, calves and lambs.

If your family likes nothing better than to learn about vast country estates, Burton Constable Hall is a nearby attraction that offers a different kind of diversion. Lots of rooms are open to the public within the Elizabethan house and there is 300 acres of parkland. Furniture, artwork and a magnificent library are on show. You can take a picnic or get refreshments at the tea room, show off your skill at draughts or play a genteel game of croquet. Kids interested in the natural world will make good use of a pack containing binoculars, a map, a magnifying glass and a bug collector. They’ll be able to spot wildfowl on the lake and numerous animals, insects and birds in the grounds.

Hornsea is a fun-filled place with enough going on to stop any family from getting bored during their cottage holiday. Children will be kept active whilst Mum and Dad can relax and enjoy one of Yorkshire’s treats.

View our good quality self-catering cottages in Yorkshire and perhaps come on holiday in July to see the Hornsea Carnival and enjoy the best summer weather. There are Yorkshire cottages with swimming pools, pet-friendly cottages where your dog can stay with you, luxury 5 star cottages, cottages with a hot tub and many more to choose from.

Book a Hornsea cottage and look forward to discovering some of the best of East Yorkshire on holiday.
