Cambridge is a special place to visit for a cottage break because of the prestigious university which has an excellent reputation for research and teaching.  Rent an apartment or holiday cottage in the city to make the most of the rarified atmosphere and spend a few days exploring the university colleges.  With a river running through it there are plenty of opportunities for boat trips or enjoyable walks by the river.  Enjoy Cambridgeshire's parklands for walks and taking it easy.  As a student city and tourist centre, Cambridge has a lively buzz about it with busy pubs and a lively nightlife.

About Cottage Breaks in Cambridge

As a small city there is no real need to hire a guide in Cambridge.  There are street plans in the centre that identify the various colleges for visitors. Bicycles, the main form of student transport, stand in military rows against walls and railings.  Handsome scenes are encountered on every street corner.  There are a number of fascinating historical buildings in Cambridge including the Rotunda or Round Church as it is also known.  There are a number of museums where you can get more information about the history of Cambridge.  The botanic gardens are worth the visit during the summer when flower beds are colourful and dazzling. Visitors to the town are well catered for with an assortment of cafes, pubs and restaurants. There are some superb patisseries around town for morning coffee and cake as well as restaurants for fine dining.

Open-topped tourist buses offer an overview and guided tour of the city which can be most useful if you need to get your bearings and plan to visit other city attractions over a period of a few days.

Once visitors have completed the cultural tour and perhaps popped in to see the museum and art gallery, there is the superb shopping centre to experience. Enjoy browsing through the shops and hopefully bag a bargain or two.

Cambridge is surrounded by pleasant countryside. Places that may be of interest outside Cambridge include the medieval village of Saffron Walden to the south, Ely with its magnificent cathedral to the north, Bury St Edmunds and lovely Suffolk to the east.  Cambridgeshire is a great place for a country cottage holiday.
