There is a string of seaside towns along the Yorkshire coast that attracts holidaymakers all year round and especially for summer holidays. The quaint family friendly seaside town of Whitby is backed by the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Down the coast from Whitby is Robin Hoods Bay, where tall cliffs lead down from the heath above to the beach. Fossils have been found here in the past and there are many rockpools for children to explore. Another bay in between Whity and Robin Hoods Bay is Saltwick Bay. This is fossil rich, especially when the terrain has been disturbed following a big storm. People go there to look for jet, ammonites and fossils. Access to the beach is down steep steps making it unsuitable for young children.

Going south, the next large resorts are Scarborough and the smaller resort of Filey. These two towns are under 8 miles apart and you could easily visit both depending on whether you are in the mood for a bustling busy seaside town or something a little more relaxed and uncommercial.
