Battlesbridge is a tiny village of no more than a couple of handfuls of houses near the River Crouch in Essex. There's a church, a couple of excellent pubs, a railway station on the Southminster branch line of the Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street line (change at Wickford) and numerous and diverse antiques shops and market. Battlesbridge is an amazing example of how a village reinvented itself and now thrives as an antiques centre. The original granary (shown below) has been converted internally to provide space for a myriad of small specialist shops. If you're looking for a shop with unusual paint or stencils, quality wall furnishings or fabrics - you'll have a good chance of finding it here. There's even a cafe. | Parking can be a problem during busy periods with people having to park in nearby roads and walk to the centre. Arrive early if you're planning a pub meal. It's not possible to book at the 'Hawk' near the railway station, - it's a case of turn up and find a table.
