The village of Halkyn is located in North East Wales in Flintshire. Surrounded by pastures and farmlands, Halkyn could be an ideal place for a rural retreat break. With a couple of pubs, shops and a parish church, there is a lovely close-knit feel to this quaint and charming settlement. Enjoy browsing for country cottages in and close to Halkyn for a special break away.

What Halkyn, Flintshire offers for Self-Catering Holidays

Within Halkyn, the church is an interesting structure to visit and is a Grade I listed building, dating from 1878. This stunning Victorian church is set in a striking part of the village and along with the village hall, is often home to community events as well as being a place of worship. Also of note in the village is Halkyn Castle, a striking early 19th century mansion house that is a Grade II listed. Taking photos of ‘the grandest house in Halkyn’ is a great way to appreciate this stunning piece of architecture located in this charming Flintshire village.

Whilst on a cottage holiday in this part of Wales, a popular thing to do is to hike up or stroll around the Halkyn Mountain Common which is a spectacular upland limestone plateau that can be found within the Clwydian Hills and next to the Dee Estuary. The highest point of the mountain is Moel y Gaer and trekking up to this point provides panoramic views over Halkyn and the surrounding towns, villages and areas of countryside. Walking through Moel y Gaer you will see prehistoric remains such as an Iron Age hill fort and a Neolithic timber longhouse.
If you have an interest in unusual and rare plants and wildlife then hiking through the Halkyn Mountain Common will be a fun and enjoyable activity. You may even spot the Great Crested Newt. Fascinatingly this part of Wales is one of the very few places in Europe where these creatures can be found, and the whole area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest to conserve and protect the endangered and rare species that reside here.

When enjoying a self-catering break in or near Halkyn you may enjoy spending time cooking at your home from home. If you want a change though the Blue Bell Inn is a lovely rural pub in Halkyn which serves food as well as drinks. This award winning pub is a family-run free house and is historical as the building was constructed in the 1700s. There are plenty of walking trails and treasure hunts that can be taken from the pub which are guided and free of charge and go through the limestone quarries and mountains of the area. Similar cycling trails can also be taken if you prefer to see the surrounding areas by bike.

This is a lovely place in Wales for a country break with the added benefit of being only a couple of miles from the coast, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds with a holiday here. When it comes to finding a good quality place to stay, enjoy browsing for rural country cottages, log cabins and even farm-stays.

Book a Halkyn cottage and look forward to discovering some of the best of Flintshire on holiday.
