The Camel Estuary is one of the most scenic areas in north Cornwall. It stretches from a broad river near the sea and Padstow to a much diminished version in Wadebridge. Throughout its length, yachts and various other boats are anchored creating a most attractive picture. Across the river from Padstow is the wealthy sailing town of Rock where many millionaires keep holiday homes and is known locally as the St Tropez of England. The Black Tor ferry carries people between Rock and Padstow. Padstow has a wider selection of restaurants and shops than Rock, including a Rick Stein restaurant. The river is tidal and the big difference in tides can be seen in the levels to which the water rises. At times there is a deep beach down to the banks of the river, at others it disappears to a mere strip. Anyone booking a cottage holiday around the Camel Estuary might wish to try their hand at sailing. This part of north Cornwall offers courses and experience in many water based pursuits. There are also walks and cycle paths with lovely views along the river. The Camel Trail with traffic free cycling runs from Padstow for seventeen miles, all the way to Wadebridge, then Bodmin. The 30 miles long Saints' Way traverses the countryside, north to south Cornwall, to Fowey on the coast. A self catering holiday near the Camel Estuary would be a good idea for any active families wishing to combine days on the beach with perhaps a little sailing, surfing and a walk or cycle on one of the traffic free trails.
