Those who enjoy visiting historical gems should visit Roscommon Castle, an impressive ruin set on a hillside on the outskirts of the town. Also of interest will be Roscommon Abbey, another atmospheric ruin, again located on the peripheries of the town. Also of note is the Old Gaol, one of the most impressive historical buildings in the centre of town. Do also make time to enjoy some Irish hospitality and ‘craic’ in the bars and clubs whilst exploring what this area of Ireland has to offer.
For those who like keeping active on a self-catering break, the town of Roscommon has plenty to offer with golfing, horse racing and fishing all available locally. The town has its own golf club and an 18 hole golf course set amongst attractive parklands. Those who like to watch horse racing will find Roscommon a great place to be as the town has its own racecourse. What’s more with the River Suck nearby those who love to fish can enjoy fishing for pike and roach amongst other fish. Although fishing is free on some of Ireland’s rivers, on the River Suck a permit is required.
