County Donegal in the far north west of Ireland is rated as one of the loveliest, most scenic, corners of Ireland for a luxury cottage holiday. Richly green and warmed by the Gulf Stream, the land lends itself to animal farming rather than arable. The lengthy coastline circuits some of the best Irish sandy beaches. Great bays of sand at Tullagh Bay and Pollan Bay are superb for family beach holidays. The entire county is dotted with some of the finest rural holiday cottages in Ireland; many of them classed as luxurious.

There are plenty of picturesque beauty sports where rocky crags rise out of heather clad moorland. This is good walking country with plenty of sheep wandering freely. The local inhabitants are a cheery lot, ready with a wave and a smile. Traditional Irish pubs offer musical evenings and plenty of ‘craic’.

It is quite possible that any luxury cottage you rent for a week or two will have a log fire since gas pipes have not been extended into rural areas. Much central heating is bottled gas or oil. An open fire has a charm of its own and can be most welcome when on holiday in Donegal.
