Earls Barton is a small village in the county of Northamptonshire and is close to the picturesque River Nene. The settlement is famous for its shoemaking heritage, with many of the villagers being employed in shoemaking, and it was even used as the inspiration for the film Kinky Boots, the true story of a boot maker who decides to produce fetish footwear to save his family business. Parts of the movie were shot in Earls Barton.
Earls Barton is home to a charming market square, a couple of shops and the Earls Barton Museum of Village Life. This small museum can be found on the grounds of Barkers shoe factory and features fantastic exhibitions and displays on footwear manufacture, a shoe worker’s cottage in the early 20th century, and other photographs and artefacts about the local area. Just five miles from Earls Barton is Grendon Lakes, an impressive part of the Northamptonshire countryside which is made up on 12 lakes set in 150 acres. On these lakes, visitors can participate in Watersports activities such as water-skiing and wakeboarding, or go fishing in some of the finest waters in the vicinity. With a bar, a restaurant and a pretty lawn and patio, taking a day trip to Grendon Lakes from Earls Barton is a wonderful way of trying something new when on holiday with friends and family.
