Tintern Abbey
The extensive ruins of 11th century Tintern Abbey lie surrounded by wooded green hills, and backed by the River Wye, in the village of Tintern on the A466 Chepstow road in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, southeast Wales.
Four hundred years of monastic life came to an abrupt end in this Cistercian abbey when King Henry VIIIth ordered the 'Dissolution of Monasteries' in order to gain complete control over the church in 1536. Once Abbott Richard Wyche, his twelve monks and various servants were evicted, the roof and windows were smashed, and in only a few years, the lead was stripped from the roof and the magnificent abbey was plundered for valuable building materials. One of eight hundred such beautiful buildings, it lapsed into ruin. The remaining standing walls date back to the 13th century. Many of the fine features and architectural detail of the abbey can still be seen to this day even though the floor is now carpeted with grass. Finely carved stonework, window tracery, graceful arches and elaborate corbels hint at it's original splendour.
A free car park can be found for the convenience of visitors alongside the ruins. There is a gift shop, local pubs, and a tea shop with the most scrumptious cakes nearby. The public toilets are well kept and clean.
This area offers walkers several walks of varying degrees of difficulty, including a six mile walk to Chepstow Castle which meanders along the river, through the forest, up and down hills and 365 stone steps. Walkers are rewarded by superb views of the Wye at viewing points along the walk.

Granary Cottage is situated at the end of a quiet country lane at the northern extremes of the Royal Forest of Dean, in the small hamlet of Elton near Gloucester. The cottage was built in the late 17th Century and is set in the grounds of Upper Hall, a country farmhouse of the same period. The cottage has been converted to a high standard with all modern conveniences whilst retaining the original character of the period.
