St Bees Head near Whitehaven, on the Cumbrian Coast features a large population of seabirds on the tall sandstone cliffs. Find colourful puffins in their burrows, black guillemots and numerous razorbills, fulmars. kittewakes.

Leighton Moss, 3 miles north of Carnforth in Lancashire is an RSPB site with shallow water and reed marsh. Wide variety of birds breed here: reed warblers, teal, garganey, grasshopper warblers among others. You may also spot migratory black terns and marsh harriers.

Gayton Sands in Cheshire (RSPB) is a wintering area for waders and wildfowl on the salt-marshes and tidal flats. Good numbers of pintail.

East Wood in Greater Manchester. This is a tiny reserve of only 12 acres of deciduous woodland. A range of woodland birds can be spotted here: tawny owls, great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, tits, robins, redpolls, tree creepers. Kingfishers and grey wagtails may be spotted along the mill-stream if you're fortunate.

Rostherne Mere in Cheshire - a large mere, edged with reeds and woodland. It lies about 4 miles south west of Altrincham. Find mallard and tufted ducks, teal, shoveler, wigeon, pochard, Canada geese. Black terns often visit in the spring.
