Truro Conrwall

About Cottage Breaks in Truro

The cathedral city of Truro stands on the River Fal between the Roseland Peninsula and south west Cornwall and has lots to offer when it comes to cottage holidays. The Maritime Line railway links Truro with Falmouth on the estuary. Truro offers holidaymakers good shopping and facilities. There is the Royal Cornwall Museum to visit,  a golf club for a few happy hours on a golf course, a theatre and cinemas.

One very pleasant way of seeing the countryside and landmarks on the River Fal is to take a ferry from Truro to Falmouth. It is not always possible to return to Truro when the tide is out because the river is reduced to a mere trickle between mud flats but the ferry company runs a bus back via Malpas, a little down river. It is interesting to see how the river grows in size and depth as it runs nearer Falmouth. At certain points ships are stored for long durations, oyster farms float in the centre of the river and yachts and boats of all sizes either float or are tied to pontoons.

Truro is another city that has a reputation for fine dining and gourmet meals. There is also a farmer's market on Lemon Quay on Wednesdays and Saturdays that sells high quality produce for the table - self-caterers take note. Many of the town centre buildings have elegant Georgian facades. The Victoria Gardens and Bosvigo Gardens provide welcome green outdoor recreational spaces for a rest between sightseeing.

Truro is a good central base for a self-catering holiday for people who prefer the hustle and bustle of town life to the peace and quiet of the countryside. Because of the railway station, bus and boats links it is possible to tour part of Cornwall without driving, which may be important to some. There are also various day trips that one can join for effortless days out.  For more hints and tips on things to see and do in Truro we recommend that you pop in to the Official Truro Tourist Information Centre on arrival.
